The Country Living Inn, Lancaster PA

Mostly to turn away from political worries for a bit, I want to put in a plug for the Country Living Inn, of Lancaster Pennsylvania. It is a motel we have enjoyed both times we have stayed there. Particularly this last time, following closely in the wake of a painful funeral, it was a great resting-place.

Also, we found a very good dinner just down the road, at the Smoketown Diner.

The Inn isn't really "out in the country" exactly--or at least not any more. "Civilization" encroaches everyone one travels now. But there is indeed an Amish farm right across the road, just as they advertise.

We could see it out our window at night, and despite the rain that evening, it was a source of some pleasure and comfort.

Really, being in Amish territory (in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois) is always a treat for us. A respite. We enjoy it greatly, and try to travel by the routes that pass near or through the settlements of these very religious people.

The Country Living Inn is non-smoking, and family owned and operated. Give them a try if you are traveling in Pennsylvania, or going down the old Lincoln Highway.

This was one of my favorite little discoveries. It turned out that it is just off the expressway, although the first time I ran across it, I didn't realize that.

Wherever we travel, we are always watch for diners. Is it nostalgia? Or for the food? Both, I think.

There are a lot in Jersey, and back east. Almost none of the metal ones here in Illinois or Wisconsin. Very few! But the one in the lower photo used to be operated near the University of Illinois campus.
