There are places where the old Route 66 is still useable.  

There are places where it is gone, torn up, impossible to detect.

And there are places where the old road is visible, but can no longer be driven down.  After all those travelers over so many years, so many decades.  This is one of those segments in Illinois:

It is impossible to travel backroads and not get lost sometimes.  Certainly we did in trying to follow historic route 66 a year ago, which is of course no longer commissioned.  

Some places there are good signs (in some states and locales) and in others there are not.  Even the published guidebooks aren't always right.  Plus, for route 66 anyhow, there are multiple alignments, based on the routings for different past years.

The same thing was true for us in trying to follow the original Lincoln Highway.  It isn't just US 30, as many think.  30 often bypasses towns, for example.

But trying to find the old roads is certainly enjoyable, and getting a bit lost is a memorable part of the fun.
