Experimenting with banners

I have been experimenting with banners made from my own travel photography. One worked out pretty well, but I have had trouble with others. (The one presently in use, showing a herd of cattle, I don't have the words as clearly as I would like in the blue sky, while at the same time keeping some part of the roadway itself in the banner).

If anyone can tell me exactly how to do this on a Mac, editing photos in iPhoto, I would be appreciative. (My photos don't have really high resolution, as they were nearly all taken with an iPhone, if that makes a difference).

Any advice would be appreciated!

I also have a Mac and have trouble occasionally getting a post to look the same on the site as it does in this little edit box. All the photos look lined up and close together etc but when I press "post" and go to look something has happened to the format! I don't seem to be able to click on the photo and move them on my mac like I can if I do it at work on a PC. My banner is only a small portion of the photo I tried to use but I left it anyway. I use a canon editing program so I'm not sure the problem lies with iPhoto.

I will be interested in the comments you get.

I use a Mac, but I resize my photos for banners with Photoshop Elements; I simply resize them to 940 X 200. I never tried on iPhoto (can you resize them there?); I use iPhoto when i only have to crop, or adjust.

I am getting somewhere with banners now, I think. (Current one shows a bridge I took out the windshield down in Florida). Now I am editing down the size and shape of photos in Mac's Preview, which has a couple tools for doing that. Seems easier than trying to do so in iPhoto.

If I can find my copy of Photoshop Elements, I will do that, too. Thanks for the tips.
